Chapter 1

Sunbeam: The Mini-Horse

( Story Version )

Millions of years ago, in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, there lived a little white horse named Sunbeam. Back then, horses were not big and tall like they are today. They were mini-horses, no bigger than a French poodle. And, because they were so small, they had to be careful not to get in the way of the dinosaurs because if a dinosaur came upon them, they might be stepped on and crushed or maybe even eaten for dinner.

Sunbeam and his friends were happy together. They would roam over the open plains with the zebras and the antelope to graze in rich pastures. Then they would drink at the lake until their thirst was quenched. Always, one of them would stand guard so that the others could eat in safety without being attacked by some ferocious beast.

After eating and drinking, Sunbeam and his friends would run and jump and frolic until bedtime. Even during playtime, one of them always stood guard to alert the others.

There were many different kind of dinosaurs back then. Some of them were vegetarians and ate only leaves and plants. The vegetarian dinosaurs were not feared for they would never eat anything but plants. Of course, they had to be careful they did not get in the way of them, for most dinosaurs were big and heavy and mini-horses were very small. Now there were other fierce and savage beasts of the forest such as the giant mountain bears with big, powerful paws or the saber-toothed tiger with big, curved fangs. They would eat anything they could catch. There was only one thing saber-toothed tigers did not like to eat and that was MINI-HORSES!

Poem Version

Once upon a story-time,
there lived upon this earth,
A herd of mini-horses,
who were all of royal birth.

They frolicked and they jumped and played
from morning time till dark,
And lived a very joyous life
as happy as a lark.

These horses were no bigger
than a dog of average size,
And they had a mighty leader
who was very, very wise.

There lived amongst these horses
one of clear and purest white,
And all the other horses bowed
when he would come in sight.

He was born upon a sunbeam
on a bright and sunny morn,
And he nursed upon a rainbow
and he grazed on heavenly corn.

He was very, very special
this white horse of noble birth,
the only very special horse
to walk upon this earth.

The leader of this herd of horses,
known as good “King Neigh,”
had tried to find a name for him…
he thought and thought all day.

Then suddenly it came to him,
one night while in a dream,
This mini-horse's name shall be
his birthing sign… "SUNBEAM!"

Now Sunbeam grew up strong and proud
with beauty and with grace,
And loved by all and everyone,
who gazed upon his face.

One day, King Neigh decided that
he'd better call a meeting,
He rounded up his mini-herd
and gave them all a greeting.

"I have some very scary news
to bring to you today,
The dinosaur we fear the most
is heading out our way."

A cry went up from all the herd,
they whinnied and they neighed,
They knew of giant-sized dinosaurs
and were fearful and afraid.

"This dinosaur who stalks our land
is ‘REX THE TERRIBLE,’
And when you see him you'll agree
that he's UNBEARABLE!"

"For he's TY-RANN-O-SAUR-US REX,"
a most ferocious beast!
He'll eat most anything he sees.
On flesh he'll really feast!"
