Marcos Pablo Delgado-Chavez has practiced fighting make-believe bulls in a pasture with a wooden sword ever since he was a little boy while Maria, his childhood companion, cheered him on. But when Marco reaches his teen years and decides to become a real matador, Maria abandons him rather than face the ultimate fate she knows he will meet someday in a Spanish bull-ring.

Luis Valdez, Manager of the Bullfighting Training Academy in Madrid, at first refuses to let Marcos enroll because of his young age and small stature, but Marcos manages to convince him he can measure up to the job because of all the practicing he has done.

Luis finally agrees to let Marcos enroll and Marcos begins an intensive and rigorous training session for six months in the school ring where he is taught all the tricks and techniques of all the famous matadors that came before him.

Finally, when it comes time for Marcos to face his first live bull, he quickly discovers that he really doesn't have the killing heart he needs to become a great matador. Sadly, he drops out of school. Because he did so well in his early training, Luis allows him to keep his sword and cape.

Maria, who missed Marcos terribly, had come all the way from their pueblo in San Felipe to see Marcos graduate, only to arrive too late for the graduation ceremony which Marcos did not qualify for.

Ashamed for his failure in the bullring, Marcos is too proud to admit his failure and so he allows Maria to think he graduated with honors.

Heading back to San Felipe in their horse-drawn cart, Marcos begins to feel guilty for lying to Maria. He tries to think of a way to tell her as they wend their way over the mountains and across the barren plains towards their little pueblo of San Felipe. Halfway across the plains, a wheel comes off their cart and they are stranded in the desert.

Is it fate that El Toro de Muerte, “The Bull of Death,” has escaped from a nearby bull ranch and is headed their way? Does Marcos have the skill needed to face this dangerous adversary all alone in the desert? And, more importantly, will he find the killing heart he will need in order to save the lives of Maria and himself?
